ARTIST

Luis Oitavén

Luis Ángel Oitavén Rodrigues (1955–2023)

Luis Oitavén was a prolific and deeply spiritual artist whose work reflected a luminous inner world. His artistic practice embraced illustration, watercolor, pencil and ink drawing, and sculpture, revealing a creator driven by sensitivity, discipline, and an enduring sense of wonder. A devoted Buddhist, he was often described as a being of light, and this serenity permeated both his life and his art.

Throughout his career, Luis Ángel exhibited his work on multiple occasions, including collaborations with the Stroke Survivors Association, a solo exhibition in Lisbon, and, many years earlier, participation in a collective show in Chiado. He also contributed to various artistic projects, notably the illustration of Mis Cartas de Amor by José Manuel Cervera. He was the cousin of Claudia Oitavén, with whom he shared a strong creative bond.

Although he longed to study fine arts, his parents discouraged this path — a disappointment he carried throughout his life. Even so, he never stopped painting, drawing, or sculpting, the latter being another of his great passions. His unwavering dedication to creation stands as a quiet act of resilience and love for the artistic calling he felt so deeply.

His legacy lives on through the beauty, depth, and spiritual clarity of his work — a testament to the gentle soul and luminous presence he brought into the world.
